COURSE PROFILE (16-hour course)
Note: NMSE version of this course will be 8-hours:

  • Understand what electrical test equipment is available.

  • Understand how electrical test equipment is used.

  • Learn how to determine if the problem is electrical or not.

  • Learn how to narrow down the problem using proven methods.

  • Receive detailed, hands-on instructions on how to use electrical test equipment, including digital meters, DVA adapters, ammeter adapters, Inductive tachometers and more.

  • Learn how to bench test various electrical parts using information not given in any service manuals.

  • Discover the reason some parts will test good according to the factory service manuals, but will not work on the engine.

  • Discover new tricks and tips for troubleshooting engines using a minimum of test equipment.

  • Learn some uncommon problems and how they may fool you, causing you to spend a lot of time troubleshooting the wrong area.

  • Regardless of your experience, you will learn a lot from this information packed course. Learn what electrical test equipment you need and how to effectively use it.


    DAY ONE...
    Introduces you to the different types of test equipment and what each is used for. You will learn the difference between outboard ignition systems and what the meters are designed to do. Learn how to do some bench testing.

    DAY TWO...
    Builds on the information given in Day One, perform hands-on diagnostic troubleshooting and getting your confidence level up. As the day progresses, you will come to realize that the problems that used to blow your mind are not so bad now.

    INSTRUCTOR
    Clark Beard is one of the Research & Development Engineers, and a senior Technical Service Advisor for CDI Electronics, the new product division of Rapair, Inc. He also serves on the AMTECH Advisory Board. Originally from northern Alabama, Clark is a Vietnam Era Veteran. His father introduced him to 4-stroke engines at the age of nine. While in the Army, he earned a degree in automotive service. After his Army discharge in 1979, he was employed in Civil Service. During the evenings, he attended Calhoun Community College and graduated in 1989 with a "Associates Degree in Applied Science in Electronics". After receiving his degree, he went to work for Rapair, Inc. Over the next 3 years, he quickly advanced to became one of the top technicians at Rapair's manufacturing facility. In 1991, management asked Clark to assist with the company's technical support department. His ability to diagnose problems has helped the company develop a reputation within the marine community of having the best technical service department in the industry. In 1994 Clark began assisting a local dealer during the evenings, and today is also a certified OMC technician. He also helped develop the CDI Electronics line of products that was launched in 1996. Clark has served in an advisory capacity for publishers of marine service manuals. Since 1997, Clark has trained marine technicians at the National Marine Service Expo receiving rave reviews for both his seminars & workshops. Clark is recognized as one of the most savvy electrical system troubleshooters in the industry. Clark now resides in Hartselle, Alabama.
