The American Boat & Yacht Council will conduct an entry-level electrical class, an advanced composites certification course and an electrical certification review/exam day for marine professionals preceding the International BoatBuilders’ Exhibition & Conference in October.
Both the composite boatbuilding certification course and the basic marine electrical class will be held Oct. 20 to 22 at the Holiday Inn in Fort Lauderdale. An electrical certification review and exam is scheduled Oct. 23 at the same location.
The composites course, taught by an instructor from Structural Composite Inc., will cover materials in use today, production and advanced manufacturing processes, structural details and hardware installation, quality assurance and safety, and environmental compliance. Those who complete the course and pass the exam will earn a designation of ABYC composite boatbuilder certification. The fee is $550 for ABYC members and $650 for nonmembers.
The three-day basic marine electrical seminar is designed for the marine technician, surveyor and boatbuilder with minimal or no electrical experience. This course will begin with basic theory and walk through the ABYC electrical standards. Other topics will include AC & DC standards, troubleshooting practices, alternators, battery chargers and bonding. The fee is $429 for ABYC members and $589 for nonmembers, and includes the textbook, “Boating Magazine’s Powerboater’s Guide to Electrical Systems.”
The electrical certification review and exam “is designed for the very experienced marine electrical technician who is familiar with the ABYC electrical standards,” Bonnie Barsa, ABYC’s education director, said in a statement. “It is also good for those who self-study, and those technicians who are due for their re-certification.”
The fee for the review and exam is $359 for members.
